Among other fields RFID technologies are also being applied more and more frequently in industrial production in order to ensure uninterrupted, smooth workflows. The main focus is put on logistics procedures, production control, or quality assurance measures. Dynamic Systems has developed an implemented a very far reaching quality control method by means of an automatic RFID inspection system for assemblies. For this pupose we have designed specific transponders in order to control manual assembly procedures.
The individual components are being incorporated on assembly boards with up to 150 stick-like connectors. Each connector is equipped with a special transponder sending a signal to the RFID reader which, in turn, depends on whether a button connected to be transponder is pressed or not. As this switch is specifically arranged in the connector it is possible to verify whether an assembly component has been clipped correctly. In an automatic read-out station all transponders are scanned and assembly errors are displayed. As these are passive transponders sourcing their energy from the reader and not via batteries the system consequently does not require maintenance.
The reading is effected via an RFID antenna which is fixed above the circulating assembly boards. The transponders by DYNAMIC Systems are placed directly on the stick-like connectors without having any influence on the assembly process (due to their compact size of 40.00 mm x 40.00 mm x 1,50 mm). A customized antenna with a length of 1,5 m enables the scan of comparatively wide assembly boards with one single antenna. Concerning wider arrangements several antennas with multiplexer are applied.
After completion, examination, and approval of the assembled product the empty assembly boards themselves are inspected in a second read station prior to their resue.
The following parameters are recorded: date, time of day, board number, number verified connectors, number and identification of erroneous assembly components or connectors respectively. The data are determined by the stand-alone RFID reader and are forwarded to the host system via an Ethernet connection. By means of this host system and adjustmend with the individual reference configuration is made for the product assembled at last. The missing or erroneous assembled components are displayed on a monitor directly in production.
Hence, the assembly process itself can be controlled 100 % without influencing the procedure and its flexibility. Consequently, quality control in an extra testing station is superfluous.
